“Nostalgia and Future” International Anthropology Conference Hosted by GSÜ-TAM
The Galatasaray University Center for Social Research (GSÜ-TAM) will host the international conference “Nostalgia and Future”, organized by the Commission on the Anthropology of the Middle East of the International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences (IUAES), on 9–11 September 2026. The conference will take place at the Münevver Soylu Hall at Galatasaray University.
Over three days, the conference will bring together anthropologists and social scientists from different countries to discuss contemporary social and cultural transformations in the Middle East and beyond from a broad comparative perspective. The programme includes panels on themes such as experiences of crisis and war, humour and social critique, food and identity, migration and diasporas, rituals and boundaries, gender and masculinity, human–animal relations, visual anthropology, and digital culture.
The conference will open with welcome remarks by Prof. Dr. Didem Danış and Dr. Soheila Shahshahani, Chair of the IUAES Commission on the Anthropology of the Middle East. TAM member, Assoc. Prof. Julie Alev Dilmaç will present a paper on humour and cartoons as a representation of catastrophe in Turkey. In addition to academic presentations, the programme will also feature film screenings and special sessions devoted to ongoing research.
